Black Button Distilling Will Grow Ingredients on Its Own Farm

Juniper BerriesBlack Button Distilling in Rochester, N.Y. is widely regarded as one of the best craft distilleries in New York State. Since the company was founded in 2012, Black button has created a line of award-winning spirits, including gin, vodka and whiskey, and its founders take pride in being the first “grain to glass” distillery in the region. Now, they’re taking things to the next level by launching Black Button Farm & Forestry in South Bristol, N.Y.

This new business venture will allow Black Button to grow many of its own ingredients in-house. The company is growing juniper for its gin, for example, and white oak to make barrels for distilling spirits. They plan on growing fresh herbs and producing organic honey for their cocktails as well. Another local business, Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care of Rochester, is providing them with the plants and trees they need to get their operation underway.

Black Button also called on the community of Rochester to help with their new farm. The company started a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year that asked volunteers for donations to finance things like root stock, saplings and the equipment they need to keep the farm up and running. Black button hopes to give back to their community by reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to the local economy and culture of Rochester.
